TIMELINE PERIOD: Months after Vanyel's death, shortly before Stefen revisited the Forest of Sorrows
BACKGROUND:
Stefen never knew his parents. He spent his early childhood as a beggar on the streets, singing for money. At the age of ten, he was discovered by one of the Bards from the collegium and taken in to be trained as a Bard himself. Though confused and terrified at first, he quickly learned how much better his life had become. He grew confident, light-hearted and cheerful, though for a long time he was still concerned that if he did not continuously prove himself useful, he would be thrown back on the street. That and his childhood experiences gave him an inclination to be manipulative and less than honest if he thought it would benefit him. Luckily, he was told before he made such a mistake that miss-using his Gift would get him expelled.
At the age of eighteen, Stefen was introduced to the famous Herald-Mage Vanyel Ashkevron. He had been infatuated with the living legend even before they met, so once their paths were crossed, Stef determinedly set himself to the task of seducing Vanyel. It took quite a lot of work, even after they became good friends, but the reward was more than worth the effort. After their first night together, they were lifebonded.
Stefen's time with Van was tragically short. Bad Things Happened, and the Herald-Mage traveled beyond the Northern border of Valdemar to find out why, with the Bard tagging along. Vanyel was captured and almost destroyed by a gang of bandits, but escaped with the help of his Companion, Yfandes and of course Stefen. Their journey was set back several days while Stefen helped his beloved recover, but through the bandits, they had learned more about their enemy.
The rest is told in Stefan's ballad, entitled Magic's Price.
ABILITIES: Physically, Stefen is small and thin, but quick and strong. He's been in more than enough scuffles to know how to win at street fighting.
As a Bard, Stef is gifted with the talents of composing and performing music. He can sing as well as play almost any string or percussion instrument known to the kingdom of Valdemar (a medieval setting, so gitterns, lutes, harps, etc), as well as a few wind instruments. What's more, he has what is called the Bardic Gift, a magic ability similar to empathy which allows him to project specific emotions through his music. A strong Bardic Gift like Stefen's can make an audience feel as if they are living whatever ballad he plays.
While Bardic is a fairly common Gift in Valdemar, Stefen's is unique in that it is combined with a Wild Gift not unlike Mindhealing. Through his music, he can soothe physical pain.
There is also the lifebond, but that relates only to Vanyel. Much like the bond between a Herald and Companion, a lifebond ties two people together permanently. Through it, they are affected by each other's emotions, meaning that one cannot be happy if the other is not, but one's happiness can help to cheer the other. Lifebonds are usually accompanied by true love. A lifebonded pair can purposefully send each other certain emotions in the same way that telepaths can send thoughts.
